The importance of flavor

No matter how good something may be for you, or how much you know you need it and should take it, it can still come down to that moment you put it in your mouth and taste it. If it tastes bad, you aren't going to want it. It's the reason the food industry spends billions of dollars on developing, maintaining, improving and innovating flavors. There was a time when the thinking was that if something tastes bad it must be good for you, but that idea is long gone. Thank goodness.

Our quest for pleasant, appealing flavors is nothing new. Going back to ancient times, humans have sought out and used various herbs and spices to flavor foods. Many civilizations built economies based on the spice trade. The first processed flavoring ingredients were essential oils, which came out of Egypt, Persia and India, dating back to the 11th century. In fact, the Arabs were the first to discover and use distillation as a method for isolating essential oils from plants, a process that became standard practice in medieval pharmacies across Europe. All in search of better flavor.

Vanillin was the first organic compound that flavorists (yes, that's a real job) isolated form a plant, which led to the multi-billion dollar vanilla extract market. And the need to create rations during WWII led to the development of the processed food industry and the rise of synthetic flavors. However, beginning in the 1960s and 70s, consumers gradually started becoming more aware and health-conscious leading to natural ingredients, including flavors, being more sought after.

There has been a virtual revolution in the flavoring industry ever since. Between consumer awareness and preferences, and advances in the science of flavoring, there now seems to be no end to the flavors available and the products they are applied to. From mango-cinnamon popcorn to dill-pickle ice cream, there is no shortage of creative applications for different flavors. And while many products promote using natural flavors, sometimes the flavor hit the mark, and sometimes it doesn't.

Riize strips are out in front when it comes to leading the market in flavored supplements. Using the delivery form of oral dissolving film strips, flavor is an obvious priority. And Riize has achieved developing advanced and superior flavors, while using no sugars, syrups or additives.

What are natural flavors?

While the term is somewhat intuitive, implying that natural flavors must (obviously) come from a natural source, the FDA defines them as chemical flavor compounds extracted directly from plants, animals or plant and animal compounds as found in nature. (Similar to the way natural ingredients are defined). Seeing the term "chemical flavor compounds" may seem contrary to the idea of natural flavors. However, every flavor is made of molecules and has a chemical composition, just like everything in nature, including our bodies. When you eat something, flavor molecules are released, and your brain then recognizes what you're eating. For example, a single strawberry is made up of 250 to 300 molecules that create its specific flavor composition.

How natural flavors are derived

Natural flavors are created by specially trained food chemists known as flavorist. The flavors are derived through a series of steps. First is sourcing, where the natural sources with the desired flavor compounds are selected. These sources may include fruits, herbs, spices or animal products. Next is the extraction process. This is done by using heat, solvents, distillation, fermentation or cold-pressing. The next step is purification where, as the name implies, impurities are removed from the extracted flavor compound. Finally, there is blending, where flavor chemists may blend different natural flavor compounds for a consistent, recognizable flavor. For example, a natural strawberry flavor may also contain flavor molecules from apples or beets. That is where the science of flavoring comes into play.

Riize natural flavors

Riize supplement strips for Energy, Sleep and Vitality are designed to effectively deliver the specific benefits they are intended for. And they also do this with the most advanced and appealing natural flavors available. Riize has spent years developing and perfecting the oral dissolving film strip format, for both pharmaceutical and supplement applications. Their advanced natural flavorings are just one more aspect of providing a state-of-the-art product.

Riize works with the most advanced flavor chemists and labs to ensure that the quality and purity of the natural flavors used remains intact through the process of sourcing, extraction, purification and blending, when used. The end results are natural flavors with zero sugar, no syrups and no additives. More importantly, the flavors are tested also ensure that they in no way take away from the effectiveness of the active ingredient supplement compounds developed for each strip.

Finally, when it comes to oral dissolving strips, there is also the aspect of "mouth feel" - how it feels when placed on your tongue. In this matter, not all ODFs are created equal. Some, in fact, may feel rigid or stiff and be slow to dissolve. Riize strips are also superior in this way, combining the active compound with a vegan base and a pure, clean flavor that literally melts in your mouth in seconds.
