The growing supplement market
Beginning with the first isolation and synthesis of vitamins, dietary supplements have been part of health and nutrition for nearly a century. And while the most substantial growth has happened in the last forty years or so, more dramatic changes appear to be happening now that will only further increase the size and reach of the supplement market.
While estimates vary, there is no dispute that the dietary supplement market has grown exponentially in the past decade and will continue to do so. The global supplement market is expected to grow from approximately $75 billion currently, to somewhere between $180 to $250 billion by 2030. Use of supplements in the US exceed the global average, with 38% of US consumers taking one or more supplements on a daily basis. One of the main reasons consumers supplements over food and beverage to support health and self-care is the ability to combine and use them in a more tailored and personalized way.
The leading supplement categories are for those that support general health, digestive health and the immune system, in that order. However, the highest year-to-year growth rates currently are for those that support mood/relaxation (+62%), increased energy (+22%) and sexual health (+16%). Sleep supplements are also a category trend that the industry is watching closely, with significant growth anticipated.
Factors driving supplement changes
The market growth and trends developing in the supplement industry are being shaped by several factors:
- Focus on preventative health.
Interest in preventative health and self-care began to noticeably take shape in the 90s and early 2000s. It became more of focus during the pandemic and has evolved to more consumers having a mindset of wanting to avoid medical ailments and costly medical treatments, and having a more hands-on approach to self-care, including the use of supplements.
- Larger aging population.
Aa an extension of the focus on preventative health, a growing aging demographic has increased the demand for products that support heart health, cognitive function, joint health and overall longevity. They are also increasingly seeking supplements that help support energy, sleep and sexual function.
- Growing active lifestyle market.
Along with an increased demand for supplements designed for an older population, there has been a strong increase among younger consumers for supplements that support more sports-oriented and active lifestyles. Interestingly, the types of supplements most sought after are the same as those the older consumers want - more energy, better sleep, and increased sexual function.
- Advanced supplement technology.
The technology in creating supplements has advanced significantly in several ways, including the science of combining individual supplements into unique compound formulas that work together to deliver more effective results. Nanotechnology is also helping to create new innovative supplements. Nano-sized particles allow previously hard-to-deliver compounds to become more soluble and bioavailable, leading to faster absorption rates and increased effectiveness.
- Increased personalization.
There are many areas in which supplements and supplement routines can be and are being personalized. There is an increasing convergence of supplements and digital health. For example, monthly subscriptions for supplement packs could be paired with apps that provide reminders and track usage. This type of personalization could also fit with the growing use of wearable devices such as fitness trackers and smartwatches. While the current use of such devices is primarily to monitor things like sleep, activity and heart rate, they could also be designed to analyze nutrient levels, leading to more individualized, data-driven supplement regimens.
The changes taking place due to these factors are also leading to the need for more advanced supplement delivery systems.
More advanced supplement delivery
The development of more advanced delivery systems goes hand-in-hand with the trends of supplement specialization and personalization. Whereas traditional formats like capsules, powders and tablets dominated the supplement market in the beginning, a gradual shift toward other supplement-enhanced products, like food and drinks, began to take place. Non-traditional supplement formats currently have about 30% of the market share. And there is a greater focus now on even more advanced delivery systems. The things driving the trend toward innovation in delivery systems are convenience, more effective absorption and user experience.
The biggest non-traditional supplement format is currently gummies, which has about 25% of the market share. In fact, it is also the largest supplement format overall. It answers some of the consumer priorities regarding supplement delivery, namely convenience and user experience. And being an oral product that doesn't go directly to the digestive system, it offers somewhat better absorption than traditional formats which are swallowed and go through first-pass metabolism. However, it still does not have the effectiveness of one of the most recent supplement delivery formats - the oral dissolving film strip, or ODF.
While supplement ODFs have been on the market for a while, they are still not as widely recognized as other formats. As more supplement manufacturers, as well as consumers, become aware of the superiority of ODF strips as a delivery format, they are positioned to become a mainstay of advanced delivery systems.
Riize innovation in ODF delivery systems
Riize is well ahead of the industry when it comes to the development of oral dissolving film supplement strips. With years of experience in developing some of the most advanced and effective pharmaceutical ODFs, Riize supplement strips currently meet three of the supplement needs most sought after by consumers - Riize Energy, Riize Sleep and Riize Extra support energy, sleep and sexual vitality.
However, Riize's position doesn't just stop there. In answer to the trend toward personalization, Riize strips offer the advantage of being so quickly effective when taken that a daily supplement regimen can be designed to fit any lifestyle and schedule, along with the convenience of being able to be carried anywhere. When compared to gummies, they are simply up to 5X faster in getting to the bloodstream, offering direct bioavailability. Riize ODFs are also made with only 100% naturally sourced ingredients, without the excessive sugar contained in most gummies. In addition, Riize has developed some of the most advanced compound supplement formulas that lend themselves to the growing trend of microdosing.
The technology used to formulate and manufacture Riize ODFs allows for consistent, controlled dosages of each supplement ingredient. Just as the size and frequency of meals can provide metabolic and dietary advantages, microdosing with supplements can help with maximizing their utilization and effectiveness through the frequency and strength of the doses. Microdosing opens up a whole new set of choices and options for supplement use.
The trends currently reshaping the supplement industry will continue to lead to the need for more advanced delivery systems. Combining cutting-edge compound formulation, with continued research into advances in nanotechnology and microdosing, Riize supplements will stay at the forefront of the supplement industry.
